Avoiding the 10-year (h)itch
Despite the approach of its lOth
birthday, the future of the AS/400
looks better, not worse, says Mark
Raphael, an independent analyst from
META Group.
As users' infrastructure plans
emerge from the quagmire of two-
tier fat client. computing to a more
consolidated 'fat server' model, we
believe the AS/400 is well
positioned to enjoy steady if
unspectacular growth (5%-8%
annually), through to 2002/03.
Indeed, 'new account' AS/400
sales represent more than 25% of
current shipments today versus
18% in 1997 - indicating that this
(we believe sustained) upturn is
already underway.
