Business-to-business e-commerce will comprise nearly 90% of all internet traffic, with a value of more than $7 trillion by 2003, according to GartnerGroup. The related IT services opportunity is estimated to be just under $1 trillion.

This trend will bring a tidal wave of electronic transactions – requiring more sophisticated hardware and interoperability across separate platforms.

IBM believes that as interoperability is key, the IT industry will shift from a platform view to a 'solution' view: not Unix, OS/390, AS/400, NUMA-Q and NT, but how they interoperate and how they support the solution.
