How are the mighty fallen. In the space of just a few months, two of the world’s most worthy consultancies have foundered: Arthur D Little has been broken up and sold at auction; while Andersen’s business consul-tancy practice has fragmented and its parts are being con-sumed by competitors.

But it is not just the old brigade who are finding the going tough. The e-consultants who once attracted so much attention are also struggling. For example, Viant has been acquired, Scient has merged and, in Europe, Icon Medialab is taking a hard line on costs and jobs following its acquisition of Lost Boys.
